Throughout my life, there have been two central themes that have never ceased to fascinate me. The first of these interests is children. I only have one older brother, but all throughout my childhood, I was surrounded by younger cousins, neighbors, and friends. I quickly developed a nurturing disposition and a passion for helping young people find who they are meant to become. This desire fueled a wide variety of experiences, such as working on mission trips and at summer camps to continue to improve the young lives of those around me.
The second of my fascinations is science. For as long as I can remember, science was always my favorite subject to study. From watching whale documentaries as a four-year-old, to diving deep into fish anatomy while gutting our day’s catch with my dad, my drive to understand the inner workings of life science continued to propel me forward. As I matured, I realized to be successful at my future career I must find a way for my interests to meet and intermix. Thus, the possibility of becoming a medical professional specializing in pediatrics emerged. With this path, I will be able to combine my love for science with my passion for improving the lives of children.
Aside from these two central driving forces of interest, I have found embroidery to be a source of peace and productivity. My mother is the creative genius in my family, as she always was exploring new art styles for my brother and I to indulge in throughout my childhood. Of the wide variety of painting, sculpting, coloring, and drawing she exposed us to, my interest resonated with the practical art of embroidery. What started as seasonal dishtowels decorated by 6-year-old me quickly transformed into a passion of making any bland sweatshirts, sweaters, or socks gain personality with just a bit of thread. When life is getting to be hectic and tense, working with a needle and thread allows my stress to fade away while still working on something productive. Though science and children will always make me feel the most fulfilled, embroidery gives me an excuse to slow down and destress, while also creating beauty in my everyday life.
